Freezepop Returns!

When Freezepop came to town this past Easter, they brought Keytarmageddon with them. After playing through a sparkling set of old favorites, the band ended the show with a one-two knockout punch: “The Final Countdown” by Europe and “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. AWESOME. On Friday the 13th, they return to the Warehouse, and for those of you who didn’t make it the first time, it will be an electronic experience not to be missed.

Singer Liz Enthusiasm spent a few minutes on the phone discussing the time between then and now, as well as the time planned between now and later. And Jason Voorhies.

Second Supper: What’s happened between April and now?

Liz Enthusiasm: We did a bit more touring, but mostly we’ve been working on new material. We also had our 10th anniversary this summer, which was kind of a big deal.

SS: Did you do anything to celebrate?

LE: We had a couple shows in Boston, an all day thing. There was a daytime all ages show and a nighttime 21+ show. It was really cool! People came from all over the place. It was sort of heartwarming.

SS: Is the new material coming out anytime soon?

LE: Yes, theoretically! Hopefully, early next year; I’d say we’re 70% of the way through.

SS: Have you been working on anything outside of Freezepop lately?

LE: I haven’t been doing any other musical stuff, just graphic designy stuff to pay the bills. Sean’s other band, Lifestyle, did a Halloween show. It was a Depeche Mode set, so Sean’s been programming Depeche Mode backing tracks for the last month nonstop. We also released some Rock Band downloadable content.

SS: Do you anticipate a lot of the new material making it into video game form?

LE: They are opening the Rock Band DLC up to user-generated content, so we’re very excited about that. It’s in our own hands now, which is part scary and part awesome. That’s another thing we’ve been doing, figuring out how all that authoring stuff works. It’s a bit of a learning curve, very technical, but Sean’s on top of that. It hasn’t officially been launched yet, but hopefully we’ll be ready when it does.

SS: How much is user-generated gaming going to change the nature of the music business?

LE: It’s actually pretty humongous. I’m sure the learning curve will keep a lot of people out of it, but if you’re persistent enough to do it, it can be a great opportunity for bands.

SS: Are there any new cover songs planned for the tour?

LE: Not yet. We’re still thinking about it. For this next batch of shows, we’re going to concentrate on previewing material, since we do have a bunch of new songs. We’ve played a couple before, but now we’re going to add even more to keep it fresh and new for people.

SS: Are you touring with the old lineup, or are the new guys coming with as well?

LE: Bananas Foster is now an official member of the band, so he is going to be coming with us. We’re still working out some lineup details for the future, but for this thing, it’s going to be Bananas.

SS: How long is this tour going to be?

LE: Really short; it’s Wednesday through Saturday! We didn’t want to go on a long tour without having any more new albums, so we’re mostly concentrating on working on the new stuff. We figured a short, long weekend will be good.

SS: Are you planning a massive tour after the album is completed?

LE: That is the hope. We’re figuring early next year, the album will come out. We’re also talking about adding more band members and adding more gear, so I think in the future we’re going to be less portable than we used to be. We used to be able to fly somewhere with all our gear on the plane and go places for a short period of time, but next time it might be more old school, get in the van.

SS: Has anything happened to you on a Friday the 13th?

LE: Not yet.

SS: What is your favorite Friday the 13th movie?

LE: I don’t remember any of them specifically; I just remember watching them at slumber parties back when I was a teenager. I never knew one from the other.

SS: They’re all pretty interchangeable, except for the one where he turns into a cyborg. That was crap.

LE: Crispin Glover was in one as an extra, back in the day. Which one was that?

SS: Four, and he did a sweet dance, and Corey Feldman was in it.

LE: Oh, shit! I need to rewatch that, then.

Freezepop will be at the Warehouse on Friday the 13th.
